Just found out that Robert Sandall, rock journalist and former host of Mixing It on Radio 3, who gave Digital Vomit it's first exposure on the BBC back in January 2007, passed away last month. He was 58.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/culture-obituaries/music-obituaries/7903300/Robert-Sandall.html

Well, I'm an ambient mood, so I just bought Mr Kirby's album from Boomkat here and it's really rather good. I was expecting it to be more like V/Vm's "ambient" moments (i.e. the yellow version of Sometimes Good Things Happen), which aren't really very soothing to say the least. But not only is it ambient in the best possible way (like something you'd imagine accompanying an art installation in gallery, say), it also shows a genuine depth of emotion that (much as I love James's noise-fests) was somewhat absent from his earlier musical space.

Basically, sorry for accusing you of selling out upthread dude - if selling out on making pop-punk-noise means we get more stuff like this then it was worth it.

I must apologise for my glaring omission. Peep Show is, for my money, THE best comedy show in recent memory. 6 seasons of awkward, neurotic, pant-shitting hilarity for you to get your miserable teeth into (The Office was the prototype, this is the full-fat deluxe model). And it's all free to view on 4od (as is How Music Works, by the way).

And how could I have forgotten Spaced? What a great show. I think the one common aspect of the above two series that makes them so enduring is the depth of characterisation. You really feel for the characters and their petty power struggles. I mean, they're a complete bunch of fuckwits, but they're just so vulnerable and pathetic, you can't help but sympathise with them.

I've never really been able to get into The Mighty Boosh. Dunno what it is, loads of my mates love it. Some of the songs are funny but it just doesn't do it for me. Horses for courses and all that.

Also, Father Ted is awesome. No other show conveys the inherent lameness of Irish popular culture as perfectly as Ted. RIP Dermot Morgan.

Also, One Foot In The Grave, Fawlty Towers and Men Behaving Badly were great in their day for sure, but they have not aged well. These are shows rooted in the broad, bigoted, variety show age of Dick Emery, The Good Life and In Sickness And In Health. In this day and age they make for rather uncomfortable viewing, kind of like watching old racist Disney cartoons.

Also, fuckbollocks.

One Foot In The Grave? Men Behaving Badly? 15 Storeys High?

Do you want to add My Family, Gimme Gimme Gimme, and Game On to your list? I.e. one totally cringeworthy mainstream sitcom, one that relies on lazy grossout humour and one that's OK but completely forgotten :P

I'll stand by my statement, Peep Show is the finest sitcom of the modern era, best sitcom since The Phil Silvers show in fact.
