i' ve been playing a lovely pc game recently called 'defcon' - its about global nuclear war and takes place on a map a bit like the one in the 1980's film 'wargames'.
the music on the game is really great - sinister, ambient and brooding. so i tore the game files open, ripped out the music and converted it to 320 MP3.
download it from the following, i really do recommend if you like dark, ambient type stuff.
Yeah man, I totally love Defcon, even though it gives me nightmares. The soundtrack really is great, all sonar pings, eerie washes of white noise, sinister atmospheric strings. Aside from being nice ambient stuff, you could also drop the bits on top of some beats for some great deep techno.
Don't suppose you could bundle all the files into one zip by any chance? Or is there a quick way to download all the tracks at once that I can't see?
yeah i thought that it was possible to dl the folder but it looks like its single files at a time
if thats the case i'll put a zip file up later (after the missus has gone to bed!)
there are lots of 1-2 second fx files too if u want them included?
i just tried to upload them in a zip and it told me that files cant be over 25mb (zip is 105mb)
so unless u can see a way to dl the folder its 1 at a time i'm afraid
No worries, I'll grab them individually. It'd be great if you compile the short fx bits into a zip though, I'd be up for using some of them in my tunes innit. Actually, come to think of it, how did you grab the sounds in the first place? If I download the game can I pull the fx files out easily myself?
no problem
heres the sound fx in a cuddly zip file
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=80YD6BJR
(funny if both our next few tracks have a defconesque feel to them)
for future reference heres how i extracted the sounds:
make a copy of sounds.dat (located in the Defcon install directory) -
change it's extension to .zip and extract its contents with winzip or whatever.
The files are OGGs so you need a file converter to change them to mp3. (i use 'switchsound' but 'winlame' is good tho i expect u know this )
oh and if u play online let me know if u wanna game - i'm still learning so easy to beat :(
Hey man, cheers for the fx files, that's awesome :)
I haven't played Defcon online as it goes, only ever played the solo version… But I love the fact that you can play the local network version out over 7 hours, so if you're in an office you can play against co-workers over the course of a work day :)
Oooh, some of those fx files are freaking great, I love the vocal stuff.
yeah bloody lovely.
defcon wave? minimal defcon? defwave? mincon?
i played the soundtrack thru today whilst writing an essay and it seemed to last about 4 hours!
or maybe it looped and i didnt notice :/
This is great stuff :)
Or should it be :(
Maybe a future DV project could be an alternative soundtrack for the Hunt For The Red October or Crimson Tide or something similar. Something full of those shots of sonar sweeps and giant maps and stuff? Or in a more WWIII mode, perhaps Failsafe? Actually, perhaps the best one would be By Dawn's Early Light (watch it online!), which has the perfect combination of military porn with nuclear annihilation, without being totally depressing like Threads or the Day After…
One of my lifelong dreams is to score (as in do the background music for) a porno.
dv branded porn?
interesting.
but seriously, the idea of collectively scoring a film is very nice
