I have an idea for a compilation. Yes, one of those things which brings us all (well, most of us) together in a peace and harmony.

I bought at Christmas a Psychic TV 12inch of one of their old acid songs. Apparently,
despite the appearance on the sleeve, both sides are by the same people under different names.
In fact the whole album it comes from is a fake compilation.

I was thinking it would be fun to do an Acid compilation the same way - anyone who contributes a track would do it under a pseudonym they have never used before: you're not allowed to call yourself by your normal "perfomance" name or one you've used before!

Is this a dumb idea? would anyone be up for it? it ain't exactly the most world changing idea as i'd like to keep the sound fairly traditional i suppose.

I guess by starting this thread i am volunteering to curate the damn thing.

Forcing people to work under a new name is fine (it was oneof the rules for the 'hush hush' project)

I assume you are suggesting the theme is 'acid' (or PTV? - my chance to pull out the drop out, tune in 12".)

Other that achiving the theme, are there any other rules (not that there needs to be)?

ok, there doesn't really need to be any rules but i'm going to make some anyway because it makes me feel important and restraints can force people to be more creative. plus it'll be fun!

1) The theme is indeed Acid. you all know what it sounds like. whether it's acid house, acid techno or acid whatever doesn't matter.
2) the music backing track should not be sampled from another record. it should be as original as possible. "lead" elements over the bassline for example (eg horns, synth stabs etc) may be samples.
3) drum samples, be they breaks, fills or individual hits from drum machines / kits etc are fine.
4) vocal samples are allways fine irrespective of source.
5) you must come up with a new artist name for your track, it should not be one you've used before.
6) if you wanna do more than one track, you need more than one name!
7) maximum track length is 5-6 minutes.
8) the closing date will be decided when i get an idea of the level of interest.
9) ditto format.

yep, you can sample odd bits of other tunes, i suppose like the horns off a james brown record would be a prety cliched example, but the whole track shouldn't be based around a sampled loop etc. Drum loops are excluded, you can use as many as you want. i'll add this the rules above.

I think that's a smashing idea Doug. I'll definetely be doing something for this; let me know if you'd like a hand organising/producing it. I'm sure you'll do fine though.

One question though - will we be allowed to publically announce our pseudonyms? I wouldn't give it away anyway, but for the benefit of others…

A good idea, but I think I'm not joining you guys.

Reason: acid is sooo not my thing.
For that I don't see myself making an acid-inspired track.

But if this would go on, then I would be very eager to hear the result though.
Maybe you could all give me another view on Acid with this project.

I don't have the relevant hardware or anything to emulate it with, and my first instinct of destroying a Fingers track or something is against the brief, but…

I can just picture the cover - a table or something with a barf-splatter-shaped hole in it… Acid Vomit… get it? I kill myself sometimes. ;)

well, i guess there is interest. I'm not gonna set a closing date though yet as i think there's enough rules for the time being once i get some tracks in i'll think about putting a date on things but it will be at least until september / october time if not longer.

if people want to publicly announce their pseudonyms then it is up to them. i think it would be quite cool actually if you didn't and let people guess until it's finished. then we can do the big reveal or something, magic trick style!

The Psychic TV single i bought was DJ Doktor Megatrip / Psychic TV feat. Jack the Tab. £1 well spent really.

I think, Mitch, we can perhaps provide you with a few odds n sods you may be able to use. Rebirth is a good starting point, though i don't use it myself as i'm a technological spacktard.

alright….got it to work. my stupid image burning program wasn't burning a bootable image, but i worked around it with something else.

Just a thought about the format… although obviously MP3 will be the cheaper, stress-free option, however for something like this I would love to see a 12" in a plain black disco-sleeve, like the old-school acid and dance releases. I've had a quick scout around for prices - if you wanted to do 250 12" records for example, this website: http://www.mobineko.com offers that for £449. If you wanted to split that up into a CBML-style funded release, then you could charge something like £50-60 and offer in return 4:30 of audio and 25 copies with shipping. As I say, just a thought.

I actually really don't want to do the time limit routine again. I will make and note of that website and think about format later. I for one don't want to spend a huge amount of money on pressing something if the quality of the tracks is bad.

Mind you, there's a 200 quid cd option on that website but i couldn't find much about it.

Perhaps "Acid Reflux" could be a possible name for this adventure…? (as it references both esophagus distress as well as the "return" of acid…)

but if you are set on Acid Vomit, then by all means, ignore my mindless blathering /

i am really looking forward to this, BTW…..as far as i'm concerned there isn't really much you can do to ruin a 303 sound, so the tracks should all be excellente /

i have a small and probably easily solved problem with rebirth. the disc i burnt it to seems to have a lot more samples on it. and it also has this other thing called modpacker which i assume is for them. but i cant figure it out…..am i just stupid?

no…..just burn the WHOLE thing with nero and boot it off the disc…..or some other image burning program….it's all very retarded, but keep try9ing….i got it eventually, and i am soooo dumb and drunk /

He lives in the next town over from me, and shockingly I've not seen him play - I saw him laptop djing when shitmat was in town (3 years ago), but didn't know who he was back then.

Not seen him since, would be nice to see him here as he must wondering where to post his tracks now that V/VM forum is no more.

i wrote a list here of artists but accidently deleted it. There's 8 of you interesested and i'd be happy with that even if no one else submits anything! By all means keep asking anyone you fancy though and maybe we can do 2 volumes if we get a ridiculous number of submissions.

Make sure when you submit your tracks to biginalbania at hotmail dot com you let me know these exact details:

1) your "fake" artist and track name
2) your "real" artist name OR which ever name you wish to be credited as. This will be kept hidden until the compilation is finished. however..
3)let me know if you wish to remain completely anonymous and it will be so!
4)Let me know a website and / or email address for yourselves if you wish to include one.

Submit as many tracks as you want as long as they abide by the naming rules etc. Looks like a few peeps have been doing some promoting and pointing people towards this thread which is great.
